Signs, signs everywhere. Driving down a typical street, one is fairly bombarded by an assortment of signs of all shapes, sizes, and colours. You may start to wonder: how do any of these signs ever get noticed? The answer is simple: the signs that stand out are usually those that are doing a few key things right. Amidst a sea of signs, it’s vital that your sign not only captures attention, but holds it. Here are a few elements of a sign that is striking, distinctive, and most of all, visible.

It’s recognisable.

Have you ever noticed that even among a barrage of signs, you can still spot the McDonald’s? That’s because Macca’s has one of the most globally recognised signs in existence. Your brain is so familiar with the symbol of their logo that it can pick it out of a crowd of images. You want your business signage to have the same effect. Now, this can take some time to take hold, but one of the best ways to do it is to be consistent with your logos and with your brand. Use specific colours in your signage and all around your business. This will eventually lead to customer association with the imagery surrounding your business, growing your reputation and creating wider recognition.

It’s bold.

Good signs stand out when they are bold and impossible to go unnoticed. This doesn’t necessarily mean the sign needs to be massive and neon, but rather it must be unique enough to draw in the attention of those who pass by. You can do this with sharp, effective logos, attractive lettering, or a unique element like lighting or unusual colouring. A sign that is run-of-the-mill will have standard lettering and logos you’ve seen countless times. Such a common piece will appear identical to hundreds of other signs. The key is to present something different to the world that is beautiful, professional, and special.

It’s clear.

An observer of your sign shouldn’t have to think too hard to figure out what your business is all about. A business that has a vague name might not capture as much attention as one that is readily apparent, so other elements will need to demonstrate what that business does. If the focus and purpose of your business isn’t immediately clear on your signage, something needs to change. This may mean transitioning to a new logo that better encapsulates what you do or adding some additional text to describe more about your organisation. A good example would be business named “The Vine.” Such a name might have certain connotations, but it isn’t instantly clear what the business is without more information. If “The Vine” is a wine store, perhaps clear imagery associated with wine, such as a glass and grapes, could help it stand out as could a use of rich colours associated with luxury and fine wines.

It’s inviting.

Lastly, a sign that stands out must be inviting. The sign itself should be aesthetically pleasing, but it should also provide some interest and intrigue. Perhaps a sign will leave you wanting more, and anxious to discover the business that sign belongs to. Even beyond that, a good sign will make visitors and potential customers feel desired and welcomed. This might mean that the signage has a friendly and open atmosphere to it, or it might be more blunt, with the sign functioning as an arrow pointing your way into the store. Whatever you choose, you want a sign that does the work of bringing people your way.

Fortunately, creating a beautiful and eye-catching sign isn’t impossible. Working with an experienced and qualified signwriter, you can have the idea signage to meet the needs of your business or organisation.
